Fitted Staircase
Bruton, Somerset
This project reimagines staircases as both functional and aesthetic focal points, seamlessly integrating them into two bedroom spaces within a high-end modern home.
-
Designed to complement the home’s architectural style, each staircase enhances the functionality of the rooms they inhabit while showcasing expert joinery and carpentry craftsmanship.
One staircase incorporates discreet built-in drawers, providing elegant storage without disrupting the clean lines of the space. The other features open shelving, ideal for books and display items, combining practical utility with sophisticated design.
Crafted with precision from premium birch plywood, the staircases exemplify high-quality joinery, with subtle shadow lines at the joins emphasising their seamless construction and minimalist appeal. Below, we’ve included work-in-progress photos, showcasing the meticulous carpentry and design process. Given full creative freedom, we managed every aspect of the project, from concept and design to engineering and construction, demonstrating the breadth of our skills and dedication to superior craftsmanship.

Staircase Case Study
-
This project involved designing and building two staircases for a high-end architectural home, where the staircases needed to blend seamlessly with the modern aesthetic of the property. The goal was to create unique, functional pieces that led to open mezzanine spaces in two bedrooms, while avoiding traditional staircase designs that would feel out of place in such a contemporary setting.
-
To achieve this, we pursued a design that was both modern and minimalist. With a steep incline, handrails were essential, but instead of traditional spindles and newel posts, we opted for a sleek, solid painted design. Box sections were used for the treads, offering a clean and geometric look. For strength and durability, birch plywood was chosen as the core material. Shadow gaps replaced cover strips, adding to the seamless, architectural feel of the design.
Although the aesthetic was consistent in both rooms, the staircases differed functionally. One incorporated integrated bookshelves, while the other featured doors to cover practical storage space. Both features were designed to be highly functional while maintaining the clean, modern look of the overall design.
This approach resulted in staircases that are not only functional but also striking modern features, perfectly complementing the home’s design.

After carefully mapping out the dimensions of the spaces in our workshop, we constructed almost every element of the staircases in a controlled environment. By setting up mock landings at the top, we were able to address potential challenges and ensure a seamless fitting process on-site.
As the various components of the staircases came together, we completed the primer coats in the workshop. However, the final coats were applied on-site to ensure a flawless finish after installation. This meticulous approach minimized unforeseen difficulties and ensured the staircases were crafted to the highest standard, ready to fit perfectly into the architectural space.
